The Mirror of the Soul

The mirror is a wonderful device, it reflects our image for good, bad, or indifference. The mirror is often honest and just in its description of mans true reflection. To some it is a welcome device for vanity. To others it is an unflattering reminder of our imperfections.

Its definition according to Webster's Dictionary is; “Something that faithfully reflects or gives a true picture of something else.” There are different types of mirrors that we can look into. For example; one shows the “physical” side of man, and the other shows the“spiritual” side of man.

The mirror is an examining tool. It allows us to carefully evaluate our self. To correct, straighten, align, calibrate and maintain ourselves to the best of our ability. The bad news is; we are limited to what we can do to improve our physical bodies in the mirror. And our bodies will one day turn back to dust. However, there are many things that we can do to correct our “spiritual” bodies in the mirror of the word of God. Only in the spiritual mirror, can we have that perfection we seek.

The Lord knew the power of a mirror. And what it could do to an honest heart. “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass (mirror): For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. (Js. 1:22-25).

In this passage we see a man like many other people. They hear the word of God, but refuse to act on its instructions. This man is compared to the fellow that gets up in the morning and looks into the mirror. And then just walks away, not caring that his hair is out of place or he needs a shave or his shirt is stained and not buttoned evenly. He goes out in the public and looks as if he has just crawled out from under a rock! He is a poor example of human etiquettes.

Now, the man that looks into the “word of God” (the perfect law of liberty). He not being a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work (follows instruction). He will emulate the ways of God and walk in the paths of righteousness. When he looks into the mirror, he will see perfection at its best. If he has any flaws he will “repent” (correct) them by stopping those sinful actions. He will reflect the light of Christ and illuminate other men. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your father which is in heaven.” (Matt. 5:16).

This ‘perfect law of liberty” is the gospel of Jesus Christ. We must be obedient and self conscious of our appearance and manners of life in the eyes of the world. For we represent Christ in all his glory and honor. Christ is that light of righteousness that outshines the sun. We like the mirror can reflect the light of the “Son” Jesus to a world of sinful darkness. We can be that walking Bible, that epistle of truth and glorify our father by being keepers of the Law.

Do you dare pick up the Bible, the mirror of God and look at yourself? Do you wish to see what the divine eyes actually see in you? Will you look like a hobo or a dashing prince or princess? Forget about your physical appearance, that is only for season. Think about your spiritual reflection, for it will last an eternity.

What can the mirror of God’s word do for you? It can help you be perfect “complete” in every way. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for Doctrine (religion), for reproof (prove), for correction (correct), for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may be perfect (complete), throughly (A-Z) furnished unto all good works. (2 Tim. 3:16-17). God’s word has everything from A-Z on what you need to know concerning salvation and how to live a Godly pure life. Look daily into the mirror of God’s word? And your life will surely show it. Have a good and Godly Day!
